Milwaukee VA Soldiers Home

The Milwaukee VA Soldiers Home also known as “Old Main” is a spectacular structure built in Victorian Gothic style of Architecture in 1869. The famous architect late Edward Townsend designed this iconic landmark as a domiciliary for veterans of the Civil War. The cream city brick facade of the structure was topped with slate and copper roof. The building was registered in the National Trust Most Endangered Historic Places in 2011 and declared a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service in 2012.

Pierce Engineers teamed with Ramlow/Stein Architects in the adaptive reuse and rehabilitation design of Old Main in 2017. Our services included repair design of roof trusses and floor framing members, floor infill and opening designs, replacement design for failing members, and interior ramps. Adaptive reuse and renovation transformed medical wards to apartments, the main dining hall to community rooms, and added supportive spaces for residents inside the building.
