This 10-story, 230,000 square-foot residential apartment building sits steps from the Kohl Center in downtown Madison. It features 179 units with ground floor town homes, two parking levels, eight residential floors and outdoor terraces at the second and fifth floors. Post-tensioned concrete framing allows for a unique column layout to support the structure’s irregular shape. Above the second floor, four wings wrapping the perimeter break up the building. PE was able to limit the number of columns in the building by placing only two columns across the 57 feet width with long cantilevers on each side of the wings. The reduction in the total number of columns led to significant savings for the auger cast pile foundations and enabled maximum freedom in placement of exterior windows.
